One of the things that I was looking forward to on this trip was showing Olivia some of the places/things we liked to play when we were little. My parent's backyard is about 3 acres of lawn (yes, someone has to mow that!) and a lot of forest. During the long summer days (it doesn't get dark until about 10:00 pm) we would disappear into the trees and let our imaginations run wild.
I, along with my brother Steve and sister Lisa (and maybe a neighbor kid or two) would play house in one particular grove of trees. Each one of us had a tree for a bedroom (yes, that is where Olivia got the climbing thing) with a clearing in the middle for a kitchen. Sometimes we would even build a fire (shhhh, don't tell Mom!) to "cook" on.
This is my "room." Sorry it's slightly blurry, but you can see that it is just the right size for a girl to lounge all day with a good book. It looks like later someone else was using it for something, and added the steps (cheaters!).
The other special place where we spent many, many hours was a huge fallen tree that had sprouted new trees out of it's side. We called it Magic Mountain. It served as a house, school, bus, and whatever else we could come up with. One of the more interesting features of Magic Mountain was a special doorway that acted as a portal to adventure. Enter one side to enter a new world and the other to return.
Imagine my delight when I discovered that Olivia and Katie had already discovered Magic Mountain and taken that idea even further by adding this:
The girls played for days limited only by their imaginations. One adventure required speaking with a British accent, another was set in ancient Egypt and one in the Rainforest. They even visited the Bermuda Triangle!
